Andrew Alexander Mercer Jr. was born on March 21, 1932 to the Late Andrew Alexander Mercer Sr. And the Late Eugertha Brown. He had two older sisters, which preceded him in death.
Brother Mercer attended public schools in Jamaica, NY. He graduated in 1951, after which he was drafted into the United States Army. He proudly served his country for two years.
After he was honorably discharged from the Army, Andrew remained in New York and he worked hard. He and his father worked as Electricians, after finishing Electrician School, together. Brother Mercer also served 19 years, as a United States Postal Worker.
In 1977, Brother Mercer, was baptized in the City Tabernacle SDA Church under Pastor Ashmead .
In 1978, Andrew Mercer Jr. married Bernice Sumpter. Pastor Ashmead and the bride’s father, Elder Sumpter, performed the ceremony. They did not have any children, of their own, but together they helped in the rearing of 31 foster children.
The Mercers began their foster family, in New York, and then the family moved to Florida in 1984. They also moved their church membership to Zion Hill SDA church where Brother Andrew served as a Deacon, as a member of Religious Liberty Department, a member of the Community Service Department. The ZHSDAC family will forever remember how our dear brother presented the Mission Stories, from memory.
After moving to Florida, Brother Mercer attended Sante Fe College and obtained his CNA License. He began working as a Human Service Worker (HSW), at Tacachale in Gainesville, FL. He worked there for 10 Years, then he retired.
Brother Mercer will be remembered for handing out spiritual tracts and helpful info that helped other veterans. He also will be remembered for the countless hours he spent in serving his community, along with St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Interlachen, FL and his home church ZHSDAC.
He leaves to cherish his memories: his lovely wife of 43 years Mrs. Bernice Mercer; two adopted sons: Luevelle Mercer and Leland Mercer (Rachel); seven grandkids; special friends: Elder Mervin Girtman, Jean Williams, Priscilla Wright, Esther Bruce, Sheila and Luis Rhodes, Laura Dismukes, and Elder Arthur Scott; and a host of cousins whom he loved dearly.
