Reflections of the life of Mother Bessie Lee Chisholm

Mother Bessie Lee Chisholm answered the call of God in the comfort of her home on January 18, 2024 at 2:00 AM in the morning.

Mother Chisholm was born on April 29, 1928 to the late Frank Ray, Sr. and the late Mattie Lee Ray in Johnson Crossroads.

Even though she was born and raised in West Putnam County, she attended and graduated high school in Alachua County from Shell Senior High School in Hawthorne, FL on April 15, 1945. In her early teen years, Bessie moved to New York where she met her husband of 37years, Samuel Chisholm.

In 1989, after living in New York for more than 60 years, Bessie and her husband returned home to Florida where she lived her remaining years with her family and friends.

Mother Chisholm was a member of the Trinity United Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Clarence Woods.

She thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Her favorite pastimes were fishing and playing cards.

Preceding her in death are her parents, Frank and Mattie Ray, Sr.; three siblings, Mildred Mason, Ruth Walker, and Frank Ray, Jr. and a special niece, Barbara Ray Santiago.

She leaves to cherish her memories:

• Son: James Walker (Christine), Johnson Crossroads

• Daughter: Theresa Walker (Dwight Sr.), Gainesville

• Grandchildren: Leslie Pringle (Roger), Gainesville; Brittany Walker, Gainesville; David Ray Santiago (Taylor Rose Eitman), Palm Bay; Dwight Williams Jr. (Shawana), Gainesville; Temmishia Walker, Gainesville; Nikita Walker-Wilson (Travis), Gainesville

• 11 Great-grandchildren

• Brothers: Aaron Raye, Johnson Crossroads; Edward Raye (Ardie), Hawthorne; Felton Davis, Interlachen

• Special Nephew: Rick Walker, Sr.

• A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends

• Special friend: Gwendolyn White, Johnson Crossroads
