Dornell Monroe
Dornell Monroe affectionately known as “Deke” was born to the late Walter Monroe and the late Daisy Wilson Monroe on February 22, 1931. He was the 13th of the following thirteen siblings: Hattie,, Nettie, Aldophus, Felix, Freddie, Jessine, Forgettie, Eugene, Daisy, Rutherford, Willie, Cassie and Dornell.
He began his formal education at Oak Grove School in Johnson Crossroads, Florida and completed high school at Central Academy High School in Palatka, Florida. After high school graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in July 1960.
He was baptized at an early age at Gilgal Missionary Baptist Church.
Dornell was married to Ethel Lee Mack Monroe who preceded him in death. To this union, two daughters were born..
During his employment, Deke worked at the Crossley mines and the Edgar Plastic Kaolin mines in Putnam County. He finalized his career with the Putnam County School District at Interlachen Elementary School retiring as head custodian in 1993 after 24.5 years of dedicated service
One of his favorite pastimes was watching television. He enjoyed watching his favorite two game shows, The Price is Right and the Wheel of Fortune. In addition, he was an avid fan of the Florida State Seminoles and the Golden State Warriors.
Missing him dearly will be:
Two Daughters: Dawnella D. Monroe and Etell L. Monroe, both of Interlachen, Florida
Three Grandchildren he adored:
E-4 Kiara M. Beauford stationed in Iwakuni, Japan: Terrance D. Beauford and Nyasia A. Hill, both of Interlachen, Florida
One Sister: Cassie (James) Taplis
One Brother: Willie (Geraldine) Monroe
A host of nieces and nephews who called him names such as “Uncle Daddy”, The Handy Man” and “Unc.”
He also leaves behind many loving cousins, other relatives and friends.
