Obituary for Ellis Pelham Sr.
We pause here today to pay tribute to the late Mr. Ellis (Pookie) Pelham, Sr., who departed this life early Monday morning, November 23, 2020 at his home at the age of 96.



Born on October 2, 1924 in Earlton, Florida to the late Mr. Charlie Pelham and Ms. Nettie Miller Pelham. He attended Public School in Alachua County. Worked at Hicks Chicken Farm in Orange Heights, Florida until enlisting in the U.S. Navy. Receiving an honorable discharge December 11, 1945. (Steward Third Class, V-6 USNR)



Upon returning home, he was employed as a truck driver for Donald Schenck Packing & Shipping Company in Earlton, Florida. In 1949 he was united in marriage to Catherine Gibson.



Later employed as a Ground Maintenance attendant with the City of Gainesville, FL until Retiring. Enjoyed sitting on his porch with family and friends, talking about the past, joking and having some drinks. (When asking how many you had, he would say, “this is the first drink of the day.” Although knowing he had many others.

He was preceded in death by his three brothers: Johnny Pelham, Lawrence Pelham and Royal Pelham. Six sisters: Daisy Pelham Bell, Julia Pelham Pitcher, Maebell Pelham Lockett, Malissa Pelham, Nettie Pelham Pugh and Susie Pelham Robinson.



Left to cherish his memory, brother Charlie Pelham (Martha) of Fernandina Beach, FL, two daughters Shirley Pelham Jones of Gainesville, FL, Cherrstine Pelham Sim (Jonathan) of Gainesville, FL, two sons Ellis J. Pelham of Waldo, FL Donell Pelham (Johnnie Mae) of Raleigh FL. Five granddaughters: Quintina Meekins (Herbert) of Newberry, FL, Constance Doby (Frederick), and Ariane Pelham of Gainesville, FL, Jackie Jenkins and Sophia Sims of Raleigh, FL. Thirteen great grandchildren, four great great grandchildren. God Daughters: Gladys Scott Washington, Latonia (Fats)Aiken and God Son’s Keauntrey Joney of Waldo, FL, Richard Rivers of Quincy, FL. Everlasting friend Johnny Rich and a host of sorrowing nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and caring friends
