Mother Estella Sommons Atkins
Estella Sommons Atkins life began on April 16,1942 when Otto Sommons and Annie Maude Mitchell Sommons gave birth to their baby girl in Gordon Chapel, Florida. She would become the third of ten children born to Otto and Annie Maude Sommons.
Estella attended elementary school in Gordon Chapel. She went on to graduate high school at Central Academy High School with the Class of 1960 in Palatka, FL. Upon high school graduation, she began her career in education by attending the following institutions: Collier Blocker Junior College in Palatka, FL; Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, FL; New York University in New York; and the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL.
After obtaining her teaching certification, Estella dedicated 30 years working with elementary school children at Oak Grove Elementary School in Johnson, FL; Harborview Elementary School in Jacksonville, FL and Interlachen Elementary School in Interlachen. FL.
Estella was a member of Trinity United Missionary Baptist Church. She was converted at an early age through the former Gilgal Baptist Church where she was identified as a Sunday school scholar. served as church clerk and sang in the Senior Choir Ministry.
Estella was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, niece, cousin, and friend. She was loved by all and cherished by many. Her life lessons will carry on throughout the generations.
On Tuesday, August 8, 2023, 4:42 a.m. at UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, FL, Estella answered her Lord and Savior’s call to rest from her labor. Preceding her in death are her parents, Otto and Annie Maude Sommons; siblings, Minister Julious Sommons and Queen Ester Abner; and grandson, Antonio Atkins.

Atkins (Marshell), Johnson, FL; grandchildren: Kurtiz, Antoine, Destiny, Jakeria, Isiah; great greatgrandchildren: Karsin and Brielle; siblings: Pastor Nathan M. Sommons (Everlena), Hawthorne, FL; Cherriestine Flowers (Curtis), Pooler, GA; Ronnie Sommons (Collette), Pooler GA; and Gloria Mays (Bernard), Harker Heights, TX; one aunt: Zelma Watson, Earleton, FL.; ex-husband/good friend Jackie Atkins. Palatka, FL.
