Reflections of Life

Freeman O’Neal DuBois was born in Corns Crossing, Florida on July 26, 1938. He was the born to the late Adam and Estella Mann DuBois. Freeman attended Shell Elementary and Central Academy High School In Palatka, graduating in the class of 1957.

He joined Gilgal Missionary Baptist Church. Freeman was baptized at Cowpen Lake, under the Reverend Carnell Henderson. Upon unification of three local churches, Freeman served as a dedicated and committed Usher and Custodian of Trinity United Missionary Baptist Church.

In his early days Freeman loved hunting, swimming, playing basketball and baseball (Casey), and working on cars. He was the barber for many in the family and the community. He passionately grew flowers, vegetables, and variety of fruit trees. After Freeman retired from masonry work. He said “God had called him to build homes, not to be rich, but to help those in need.

In his later years he enjoyed carpentry, painting, mowing lawns, working on lawn mowers. He loved historical things such as a myriad of newspapers, antiquities of old tractors, jugs, bottles, and lumber. He felt ones man’s trash was to be refurbished into another man’s treasure.

Rosa Harris presented Freeman with the Black History Service Award from Galilee Missionary Baptist Church on February 5, 2012. He was honored for his outstanding Service and Dedication to the Greater Hawthorne Area for exceptional workmanship.

He was preceded in death by his brothers O’Curlest and James Alexander (Ora Mae, Clarence Slater (Maggie B.), John DuBois (Henri Mae), Willie DuBois, Napoleon DuBois (Christine), Sisters Elizabeth D. Smith (Ted), Ellen I. Coleman, Verlee Shell (Arthur), sisters-in-laws, Althea Davis (Equilla), Tasha (Chimere) Houston, bother-in laws, Wesley Wilkerson, Paul Wilkerson, Sam Wilkerson, John Wilkerson and, Reverend David Fountain.

He leaves to cherish his memory a loving wife of sixty-one years Johnnie Lee DuBois, two daughters Tonya Lewis, Gainesville Florida, Alfredia Carwell (Dwight), Oceanside California, and one son Reginald O. DuBois Sr. Hawthorne Florida, one sister Mildred DuBois, Hawthorne three brothers-in-laws Peter Wilkerson (Venita) Winter Haven, George Wilkerson, Jonesboro, Georgia, Clyde Wilkerson (Jennifer) Ocala, sisters-in-laws Charlene Alexander, Cleveland, Ohio, Louise Wilkerson, Lakeland, Mackie Wilkerson, Citra, Ruth Wilkerson, Ocala, Shirley Fountain, Orange Lake, Hetti Ross, Hawthorne, Uncle Richard James, Ocala, eight grandchildren, Shevonne Lewis, Reginald O. DuBois, Jr., Dwight O. Carwell, Kyle Carwell, Miracle DuBois, Passion Buchanan, Darien Lawson, Rhashonna (Ra’juan) Dennis and two
great grands Ra’juan Dennis Jr., and Rai’yden Dennis, special nephew Carl Daniels and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The “Final Call” came for Freeman on Tuesday, February 15, 2022, when he peacefully departed on to a higher stage, after a life well-lived came to an end. He leaves a lifetime of memories to a host of friends and the DuBois Family.
