She joined the Green Grove Missionary Baptist Church at an early age holding several positions in the church. She was a Deaconess at Zion watch Baptist Church where her husband JT Thornton was a Deacon.
She attended the public schools of Stewart County, Georgia. She furthered her education at Albany State College, Albany GA, receiving a bachelor's degree in education, and continued her studies at Tuskegee Institute, Tuskegee, Alabama.
She taught in Georgia for over 40 years at the Zion Watch Community and Lumpkin Elementary School retiring after 40 years of service.
She leaves to cherish her memory: A loving Daughter Yvonne T Herring (Eugene Sr.) Hawthorne, FL; one Grandson, Eugene Herring Jr., Charlotte NC; two Granddaughters, Hattie Lartrelle Herring and Katrina Yvonne Herring, Orlando, FL; two Great-Granddaughters, Jayla Genae Herring, Tallahassee FL, and Aniya Jade Barthelemy, Orlando, FL; God Son, Reginald Strickland (Carmelitta),Gainesville, FL; Brother-in-Law, Willie E. Thornton, Waco, TX; Nieces, Rev.
