Obituary for Larry Darnell Smith
Gainesville - Larry D. Smith, 63, peacefully passed away July 5, 2014. Affectionately known as "Lap & Coach Larry", he was a member of Greater Bell United Methodist Church and served as Class Leader. A graduate of A.L. Mebane High School Class of 1968. Larry was an avid fan of sports and was a loyal teammate of the A.L. Mebane Hornets and Monteocha Mustangs Baseball Teams. He served in the U.S. Army & Army Reserve Units. He graduated from Santa Fe College with an AA Degree and attended the University of Florida. Larry retired from Malcolm Randall V.A. Hospital after 33 years of service. Larry coached many sports in the Monteocha Community and beyond. On May 17, 2014 at the May Day Festival Celebration, Larry was honored by the Greater Monteocha Gordon Community Development Association, Inc. for his service in the community as the "Larry D. Smith Day". He leaves to cherish his memory: Wife, Beverly C. Smith; sons, Antonio (Tujuanna) Smith and Malcolm Cromarty; grandchildren, Quinton, Blake, and Bryce Smith; sisters, Shirley A. Hill and Mary A. Smith; brothers, Douglas Smith and Kenneth (Sheila) Smith; mother-in-law, Elzada B. Cromarty; and a host of other relatives and special friends.
