Obituary for Ruby Jean Pinkney-Konopka**
**January 18, 1947 — August 7, 2025**
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ruby Jean Pinkney-Konopka, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, who left this world peacefully on August 7, 2025, in Chicago, IL, after a courageous battle with cancer and paraneoplastic syndrome (PNS). She was 78 years old. Ruby was born on January 18, 1947, in Alachua, Florida, and she carried the warmth of her southern roots throughout her life, even as she ventured into the bustling streets of Chicago, the city she proudly called home.
Ruby was the cherished daughter of Bessie (Darling) Clark and Darnell Hall. She was preceded in death by her son, John L. Pinkney Jr. (Jacqui), her father, Darnell "Pat" Hall, her ex-husband John L. Pinkney Sr., and her grandson, Bryan A. Pinkney Jr. Ruby’s legacy will live on through her loving family: her devoted husband, Victor Konopka; her remarkable and caring son, Bryan A. Pinkney (Kristal); her compassionate and caring daughter, Crystal Pinkney; and her adoring mother, Bessie Clark. She is also survived by her beloved aunt, Alice Williams; her sisters, Darveta "Dee" Thomas (Ray deceased), Jacqueline Clark, Bridgett Lewis (James), Elease Clark, Patricia Foreman (Robert), Valerie Clark; her God sister, Rosa Taylor; her brothers, Carnell Hall and Christopher Hall; and her granddaughters, Rakia Pinkney Coleman (Nakoti), Ananiah Pinkney, Armone Pinkney, Avian Pinkney, Breona Pinkney, Kiara Sweat, along with two great-grandchildren, Jayla McCray and Carter Coleman. The family also wishes to recognize a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who brought great joy and support to Ruby's life.
Ruby's journey through life was rich with experiences that shaped her into the remarkable woman she became. She was a passionate advocate for those in need, serving as a case manager for a non-profit organization dedicated to helping homeless women and as an addictions counselor for Hay Market. Ruby’s commitment to education led her to attend Harold Washington and Truman Colleges, and later, Roosevelt University, where she cultivated her love for journalism and higher education. It was at Truman College where she met her second husband, Victor, a union that blossomed into a loving partnership filled with shared dreams and mutual respect.
A deeply faithful woman, Ruby was a devoted member of The Moody Church for over 20 years, where she served as a prayer partner and greeter, welcoming others with her radiant smile and infectious laughter. Her faith was the anchor that held her steadfast during life's trials, including her illness, and it inspired those around her to embrace life with joy and gratitude.
Ruby had a special love for the written word; she cherished the art of sending physical cards for every holiday, writing heartfelt letters, and wrapping presents with creativity and care. Her hobbies also included a love for Zumba, a passion for animals, and the joy of attending concerts. Ruby found beauty in the everyday moments of life and had an extraordinary ability to connect with people, especially those who might be overlooked. She approached each day with a smile and a belief that everyone had a story worth hearing.
Her family and friends are grateful for the many kindnesses they received from Ruby throughout her life, whether in the form of laughter, tears, stories, or photos. These moments have left an imprint on their hearts, a testament to the love she freely gave and the lives she touched.
A memorial service will be held to honor Ruby's life on August 30, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church, located at 9975 NW 143rd St, Alachua, FL 32615. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Autoimmune Association and/or the American Cancer Society.
As we say goodbye to Ruby, we celebrate the vibrant spirit she brought into the world. Though she may have left this earthly realm, her love and legacy will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew her. Rest in peace, dear Ruby. You will be missed but never forgotten.
