Obituary for Sharon Fay Thomas

Sharon Fay Thomas, age 67, was called home to glory to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 11 at the home of her daughter in Lutz FL following a long illness from a stroke.

Sharon was born on July 13, 1955 to Ida Mae (Bessent) Thomas and Legardias Alonzo Thomas of Yalaha, FL. Sharon was a go-getter and considered the “Geek” of the family. She was a caring soul and a fierce advocate for justice. Even though she was smart and a bookworm she did not hesitate to fight to defend her friends and her family. Sharon was a compassionate and empathetic person possessing the ability to relate to many people she encountered.

Sharon graduated from Leesburg High School in 1973. After graduation Sharon attended business school in Eustis FL obtaining executive and administrative skills. In 1977 Sharon went on to study teaching at Texas College in Tyler, Texas. While at college she became a sister of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Alpha Tau Chapter. She returned to Florida in 1980 after earning her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education.

Sharon was blessed with the birth of her daughter Andreia in 1981. Although a single mother, Sharon worked tirelessly to make sure her daughter had the best upbringing any child could want.

Sharon was a devoted educator for the Alachua County School District for over 30 years. Her passion was for the youngest students. She taught at several elementary schools until her health declined. She had a big heart for her students. She instructed students at Williams Elementary in Gainesville FL, Shell Elementary in Hawthorne, FL. Rollins Elementary and Metcalfe Elementary in Gainesville FL. While working full time Sharon also completed her Master’s in Education degree from the University of Florida. Sharon was also a member of the Alachua County Education Association.

Sharon was a faithful member of Church Of God By Faith, Gainesville, FL. Sharon relied on her deep Christian faith to guide her everyday. Sharon was by all means the true definition of a prayer warrior. She would pray for anyone, anywhere when and when not requested. She was a choir member who believed in lifting her voice for the Lord. She was also a part of home mission and outreach. Her faith was very important to her. She was consecrated as a minister in July of 2010 under the leadership of Bishop James E. Mcknight Sr. She was also a member of the Gainesville District Women's ministry.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Myrtle Coats.

She leaves to cherish her memories her loving daughter, Andreia (Andrew) Massiah of Lutz, FL; five loving sisters, Shirley (Medford) Davis, Annette Thomas, Gail (Tom) Wright, Kaye Mills, all of Johnson, FL, Sodona (Leonard) Galloway of Gainesville, FL; two brothers, Legardias Alonzo (Irma) Thomas, Jr., El Paso, TX and Burnell Thomas, Johnson, FL and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and beloved friends.
