Obituary for William Lawrence Stokes
The Life of William L. Stokes
William Lawrence Stokes , known to most as "WL", was born February 13, 1936 in Johnson, Florida. His parents were the late James Stokes and the late Lula Bell Jenkins.
 
He attended public school in Putnam County. WL received the LORD at an early age at the Gilgal Missionary Baptist Church in Johnson. Though he moved to Putnam Hall, he remained a faithful member and transitioned membership to the Trinity United Missionary Baptist Church attending services whenever he could.
 
WL met the love of his life, Waltermae Williams. They were married May 11, 1957. The couple shared 63 wonderful years during which they raised four children. Over his lifetime, WL was employed for 10 years at the University of Florida. Later, he became a Human Services Supervisor at the Sunland Training Center, now known as Tacahale. He retired from the state position and enjoyed many years doing the things he loved.
 
WL loved life. His favorite pastimes were fishing, spending time outdoors planting and gardening, playing cards with family and friends and working with his hands. He was known as a great handyman.
 
He was preceeded in death by his sister, Mellonese White.
Those who will remember him are his devoted wife, Waltermae Stokes. Four children: James Stokes (Debra), Gainesville; Kenneth Stokes (Bridget), Alachua; Cheryl Stokes, Putnam Hall; Keith Stokes (Teresa), Gainesville. Seven grandchildren: Shapierria Pinkston, Kymara Stokes, Chambrin Stokes, Daniyla Simmons, Dal-Tonya Douglas, Anthony James, Sabrina Leonard. Eight great-grandchildren: Jazielle English, Jonah Hamblin,
Lew-Tavaia Singleton, A'Zaylah Stokes, Demareyae Givens, Khalipha Hill, Paris Revell, Jr., Chancz Payton. Five God-children: Cendra Simmons, Makalya Durant, Chris Johnson, Annette Thomas, Dorothy Rutledge. Other relatives: Aunt Leola Jenkins, Rally, FL; close cousin, Audrey Carter, Ocala, FL; many devoted inlaws: Alfred Williams Sr. (Evelyn), Herbert Lee Williams (Marilyn), Inez White (Charles), Harriet Leonard (Osmond), Virginia Strickland, Leon Williams, Ernest Williams and Wallace Williams. There is also a host of other loving family, friends and former co-workers.
